WILLIAM BLAKE

Songs of Innocence

Songs of Experience

  • SONGS OF INNOCENCE and SONGS OF

EXPERIENCE can be seen as two

complimentary collections.

  • They represent Blake’s dual vision of life , his

view of the interdependence of good and evil,

desire and frustration.

  • These two states coexist in the human being

and are an essential part of his vital energy.

  • Their meaning depends on whether it is read

innocently or with the eyes of experience.

  • SONGS OF EXPERIENCE : In this poem we see

what this FALL consists of.

  • Man cannot always be a child and has to grow

and inevitably go through the stage of

experience.

  • It portrays the world of adult life and it

constructs a parallel universe where people

are selfish and incapable of spontaineity.

BLAKE’S SYMBOLISM

  • Children, flowers and seasons symbolise innocence.
  • Urban, industrial landascapes and machines represent experience (adulthood), oppression and rationalism.
  • His most famous dual symbols that reflect his view of the French Revolution are the LAMB and the TIGER.
  • The lamb is a symbol of weakness and innocence, and it refers to the God of love and the forgiveness of the New Testament.
  • lamb=child=source of creation
  • Blake did not express nostalgia of the past, trying to overcome the violent consequence of the Revolution.
  • He simly described the contradictory forces of beuty and horror. The contradiction itself was the source of the its vital energy.
  • The TRUE POET for Blake is the one who possesses the power of imagination. He is a visionary who can see what remians hidden from ordinary mortals.
  • Personal experience is more important than subjective truth.
