Stanza 1 I walk through every street that is controlled and marked by laws. Near the area where the Thames River flows, I notice that every face I see shows signs of weakness and suffering. Stanza 2 In every man's cry, and in the fear expressed by every child, I hear a sound in every voice and every law that represents mental chains created by society. Stanza 3 I hear the cries of chimney sweeps, and I am shocked by how the polluted church represents moral decay. The sigh of the unfortunate soldier can be heard, as it runs like blood down the walls of the palace. Stanza 4 But mostly, as I walk through the dark streets at night, I hear the curse of the young prostitute. Her words affect the innocent newborn's tears and bring sickness to the institution of marriage. Moral The moral of William Blake's poem "London" is a criticism of the problems in society that cause people to suffer. Blake shows how many people in the city live in poverty and sadness. He points out that institutions like the church and government do not help those in need. The poem highlights the dark side of city life, like exploitation and moral failure, which harm everyone. Blake wants readers to see these issues and encourages compassion and change to improve people's lives.
