Holy Moldy! Bread Mold Experiment
Guidelines:
• Before you engage in any of these experiments seek the permission of an adult in charge.
• Inform everyone in the house to not go near the experiments or consume them.
• Keep it away from any house pets.
• Keep it away from other consumable items.
• After every experiment, you will need to throw the slice of bread and the plastic bags and
containers used, even if you do not see any mold. Remember mold is not always visible to the
eyes.
Things You’ll Need for the experiment:
* Bread (Pandesal or Monay) * Plastic bag
* Water * Tape and Marker
* Container *Phone with camera
Experiment:
Sprinkle water on a slice of bread.
Put the bread inside the container seal it with plastic bag and tap the side to secure the
cover.
Place this in your balcony or some place outside of the house where it will be
undisturbed for 7 days.
Track the growth of your mold by checking on it daily.
Take a photograph on each day and make a note about the size and color of the mold
growth.
Once you’ve completed the experiment, throw away the sealed bag containing the
moldy bread. You do not want to be around when the bag opens. Inhaling mold spores
is harmful.
Make a note of your observations over the 7-day period.

The smell and appearance of pandesal is the same as yesterday. Day 2 Date: 11/19/ Though the appearance of pandesal is still the same, the smell coming from it is awful.

Day 3 Date: 11/20/ Though it can’t be seen clearly in the photo, a small part of pandesal has a discoloration. Moisture can be also seen in the plastic bag and the smell become worse. Day 4 Date: 11/21/ Dark and light green molds arises on the center of pandesal. The moisture is still present and the smell is awful. Day 5 Date: 11/22/ Dark green, black, and light green molds are present in the bread. These molds continue to spread throughout the bread but the smell is still the same. Day 6 Date: 11/23/ The molds almost covered the entire pandesal and there is a cotton-like thing that arises from the it. The smell becomes worse. Day 7 Date: 11/24/ The molds fully covered the pandesal. They created their own colonies. The cotton-like thing continues to spread throughout the bread. The smell coming from it is the worst from the day I start this experiment. Questions

  1. What changes did you observe each day? As the day goes by, the molds or the discoloration spreads throughout the pandesal and its smell worsens.
  2. What is the end result?
