CHAPTER III
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the procedure used in conducting research. It the covers
research design, population and sample, research subject, research instrument, data
collection and data analysis.
3.1 Research Design
Ary et al. say that "Research design is the researcher's plan of how to proceed
to gain an understanding of some groups or some phenomenon in its natural setting"
(2010:426). The design begins with a general statement of research problem or
topic. In other words, the term of research design is used to refer to some plans and
steps in conducting research study which aim to gain accurate data based on the
determined questions or problems.
According to Ary et al. (2010: 29), there are two ways in classifying the
types of research, they are quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative
research uses objective measurement to collect numeric data that are used to answer
questions or test predetermined hypotheses. Otherwise, qualitative research focuses
on understanding social phenomenal from the perspective of the human participant
in natural settings. It does not star with formal hypotheses, but it may result in
hypotheses as the study unfolds.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the procedure used in conducting research. It the covers research design, population and sample, research subject, research instrument, data collection and data analysis. 3.1 Research Design Ary et al. say that "Research design is the researcher's plan of how to proceed to gain an understanding of some groups or some phenomenon in its natural setting" (2010:426). The design begins with a general statement of research problem or topic. In other words, the term of research design is used to refer to some plans and steps in conducting research study which aim to gain accurate data based on the determined questions or problems. According to Ary et al. (2010: 29), there are two ways in classifying the types of research, they are quantitative and qualitative research. Quantitative research uses objective measurement to collect numeric data that are used to answer questions or test predetermined hypotheses. Otherwise, qualitative research focuses on understanding social phenomenal from the perspective of the human participant in natural settings. It does not star with formal hypotheses, but it may result in hypotheses as the study unfolds.

Based on the explanation above, the writer decided to choose the qualitative research design because this research describes characteristic of a phenomenon being studied. The purpose of using qualitative research in this study is because the writer wants to descriptive grammatical errors in writing descriptive text made by Thai students and the possible cause of grammatical errors in writing descriptive text. 3.2 Research Subject Research subject is an individual who participates in a research study or someone from whom data are collected Darlington and Scott (2002; 52) mention that research participant in qualitative research must have “the capacity to provide full and sensitive descriptions of the experience under investigate” In this research, the researcher took Thai students of English language education department at the third semester 2016/2017 Academic Year at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang as the subject of research. The reason that the researcher took third semester Thai students as the subject of this research was because the research only focused on Thai students of English Language Education Department at the third semester 2016/2017 Academic Year. 3.3 Research Instrument Ary et al. (2010: 431), there are some instruments commonly used to guide and help the researcher to generate the data such as observation, interview, writing test and document analysis. In this research, the researcher used writing test to the Thai students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang. One way in which

3.5 Data Analysis The next step after the researcher collects the data is analyzing the data there are some steps in analyzing the data. They are presented as follows:

  1. Reading and understanding the descriptive text made by Thai students.
  2. Identifying the kinds of errors made by the learners. In identifying the errors, the researcher must compare the sentences that were produced by Thai students to the correct in the target language.
  3. Classifying the errors that had been found based on the types of errors using surface Taxonomy proposed by Dulay et al. (1982: 150)
  4. Calculating the errors in order to find out the frequency of every kind of errors. In calculating the frequency of errors, the researcher used formula as follow: Number of error of each type Total number of error of all types X 100%

Then, the result of students’ errors were presented on the percentage as follows: No. Types of Error Number of Error Percentage (%)

  1. Omission
  2. Addition
  3. Misformation
  4. Misordering Total
  5. Drawing conclusion based on the data analysis.
