A. Four steps to active listening

1. Active listening: listening through questions and feedback

a) Paraphrasing: restating in your own words using statements like: (1) “What I hear you saying…” (2) “In other words…” (3) “Do you mean?…” (4) “Do I understand that you thought….” b) Clarifying: Asking questions until you get the complete picture (1) Do you mean this or this? (2) I’m not sure what you mean by… c) Feedback: non-judgmental reaction––honest and supports dialogue (1) I wonder if [your description] is what is really happening (2) Do you think xxx would feel differently?

2. Listening with empathy: recognize their views may come

from personal experience

a) They may be angry for a reason b) They may be hurt by their experience

3. Listening with openness: try putting yourself in their shoes to

understand what they are saying

a) If you can understand their views, you can understand them b) Test: try arguing the opposite perspective with someone

4. Listening with awareness: compare message with

knowledge and their body language

a) Their body language b) Your experience c) Your knowledge of people, history, etc.

B. Four kinds of expression

1. Observation: reporting what your senses or experiences tell

you

2. Thoughts: conclusions or inferences drawn from what you

have heard, read or observed

3. Feelings: how you are personally affected by something or

someone

b) NO: You are an ego-driven person who won’t listen to anyone

B. Receiving messages effectively

1. Paraphrase accurately without evaluation

2. Describe what you perceive to be their feelings

3. State your interpretation

a) Explain what you understand b) Clarify c) Negotiate until you agree on the message
