A. Background Information for Learners
Contemporary art refers to current and very recent practice. It refers to
works of art made by living artists. It is art produced at the present period in time. It
tends to be assessed thematically and subjectively, drawing on an expanded range
of theoretical and practical disciplines. Contemporary art includes and develops
from postmodern art, which itself a successor to modern art. Modern art is not the
same as contemporary art, although they could share some characteristics,
sources and influences.
Integrative or integrated arts refers to inter-disciplinary art, art research,
development, production, presentation, or artistic creation of work that fully uses
two or more art disciplines to create a work for a specific audience. It is expressing
the human feelings and emotion by using a combination of visual art, music, dance,
creative moment, drama, performance and technology. Integrative art usually
requires interaction between people and the integrative artworks which always
communicate with people in an expressive and astonishing way. The rapid growth
of technology resulted to contemporary art (the period of the modern era of fine
arts) being dominated by integrative mixed art mediums as compared to the
traditional single art mediums of the previous generations.
This learning activity sheet will help and guide the learners in understanding
what constitutes integrative art including its most modern examples in order that
they can appreciate its relevance to contemporary art and modern society.
Learners will also realize and learn how to integrate and transform elements from
modern art into contemporary art and describe various contemporary art forms and
practices from the various regions.
