Firstly, Owen explores the idea that Pro-war propaganda was deceptive. In the title “Dulce et Decorum Est” Owen effectively uses irony to highlight his

view that war is anything but sweet and noble. This conveys Owen disapproval of the government’s choice to portray warfare as glorious as he has suffered loss and seen horrors that no man should see on the front line. This positions the audience to feel appalled at the conditions which these soldiers face and the awful manner in which they died. The audience are asked to consider horrific nature of the reality of modern war. It is through this irony that Owen attacks the idea of "noble" sacrifice, calling it an "old lie" (line 27) that encourages young men to fight.
