Coronavirus, also known as COVID19, has affected individuals and their families in multiple ways. Individuals are becoming terminally ill with the virus and are at risk of losing their life. Others are unable to see their families due to the fear of passing to their loved ones. Lastly, some people have lost their only income source, are struggling to find a new job, and are no longer capable of supporting their families. Each of these situations is an experience each of my clients had to face with this pandemic. My job as someone in the Human Services profession is to make sure that these individuals are receiving constant support, proper resources, and adequate treatment in their counseling sessions. Due to the changing of the emergency plans and the continual need for shelter, my job has consisted of me making sure that my clients have a place to stay for the night. I have had multiple families lose their housing due to the effects of coronavirus, in addition to having clients who lost loved family members during this pandemic. Situations such as this have brought up a lot more stressors and have impacted multiple individuals and families. News Article Summary The coronavirus is a respiratory illness that can be spread from person to person (CDC, 2020). this virus has gone from being an isolated virus to a global pandemic that has infected millions of people worldwide. The first individual to die from COVID-19 lived in Washington, 2 Running Head: HUM5010 WEEK 3 WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT and their death occurred in early February of 2020. There are now over 250,000 deaths that have happened in the United States that are caused by COVID-19. Based on the percentages that happened and mid-September, hospitalization of individuals of all ages rates have been increasing (COVIDView, Key Updates for Week 46, 2020). However, there has been a decrease in rapid death rates, but the CDC believes the death rates will increase come October (COVIDView, Key Updates for Week 46, 2020). Individuals who have COVID-19 are still recommended to be quarantined for 14 days and contact other individuals. If anyone is hospitalized due to the coronavirus, family members cannot visit the family member who has the illness. Testing how it's become more frequent, an individual who displays symptoms of COVID-19 more capable of receiving the proper testing, individuals who aren't showing a lot of sometimes can get free testing at local over the counter pharmacy stores like Rite Aid and CVS. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs With individuals experiencing dramatic loss, whether it's the loss of a family member due to coronavirus, or the loss of a home or a loss of a job, there are three stages of Maslow's needs that need to be met. The first stage of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs would be the physiological stage. This beginning stage will help ensure that the individual will overcome their Recent loss and provide them with their basic needs of survival, such as food and security. Having safety and security is essential, especially during this pandemic. Individuals need to be aware of their interactions with others and making sure that they are not exposing themselves or others to the virus. Individuals and families who seek proper medical attention when experiencing coronavirus symptoms are selling their safety and security needs. Lastly, the third stage of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a sense of love and belonging. These needs can be met through having positive relationships with family members and having communication with them. Although they
