It also helps in removing waste products such as carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes. This system works continuously without rest and is essential for maintaining life and proper functioning of the body. Every cell in the body depends on the circulatory system to receive oxygen and nutrients and to remove waste products.
The circulatory system is made up of three main components: the heart, blood vessels, and blood. These components work together in a coordinated and efficient manner to ensure continuous circulation of blood throughout the body. The proper functioning of these components is necessary for maintaining good health.
The heart is a muscular, hollow organ located in the chest cavity between the lungs. It acts as a powerful pump that continuously pumps blood throughout the body. The human heart is about the size of a fist and beats approximately 70 to 80 times per minute in a normal adult. The heart is divided into four chambers: the right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, and left ventricle. The atria receive blood, while the ventricles pump blood out of the heart. The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body and sends it to the lungs for oxygenation. The left side of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to all parts of the body. Valves are present in the heart to prevent the backflow of blood and ensure one-way flow of blood.
