Candidates are requested to answer TWO of the following questions.
Please use a separate answer book for each question
1. Baddely (1984; 2000) extended the concept of the short-term store to include
multiple subsystems and a central executive that temporarily holds and manipulates
information as we perform cognitive tasks. Referring to empirical evidence, give an
account of any two components of this working memory system and comment briefly
on the current status of the model.
OR
Cognitive-experimental investigations indicate that working memory capacity is
related to an executive attention ability that supports the active maintenance of goal-
relevant information in the face of interference. Discuss
2. Write on two of the following aspects of long-term memory
(i) Factors that enhance encoding
(ii) The role of retrieval cues and context effects
(iii) Emotion and autobiographical memory
(iv) Hierarchical and spreading activation theories of memory storage
3. As research on memory distortions progresses, we are closer to understanding the
factors that create inaccurate memories. Discuss with particular reference to false
memory studies and the misinformation effect.
4. Using research examples examine the nature of expert and novice differences in
cognitive processing of domain-based problems.
