CJSim Reflection Assignment Kelsey Cobb Chamberlain University College of Nursing NR 283: Pathophysiology Lisa Stewart October 6, 2024
Reflection During this assignment, I had the opportunity to assess and prioritize the care of Jolene Sigmund, a patient diagnosed with pancreatitis. Her risk factors include a family history of pancreatic disorders, excessive alcohol consumption, and smoking. Upon examination, her abdomen was distended and tender, and she was experiencing persistent vomiting with a constant pain level of 9. My immediate priority was managing her dehydration, which was effectively addressed with IV fluids. This case taught me the importance of promptly identifying and treating symptoms that could exacerbate her condition, particularly during the critical first 48 hours of diagnosis, when the severity of acute pancreatitis can be more accurately predicted. Reflecting on this experience, I realize how valuable these insights will be in shaping my future behavior as a healthcare professional. Understanding the critical signs and lab results associated with pancreatitis has enhanced my clinical decision-making skills, particularly in prioritizing care for patients with acute conditions. Moving forward, I will be more confident in recognizing early warning signs of complications, improving my ability to provide timely interventions. This case also reinforced the importance of a comprehensive patient history, including lifestyle factors such as alcohol and tobacco use, which can significantly impact disease progression. These lessons will undoubtedly influence my approach to patient care, helping me deliver more informed and effective treatments.
