Sexually transmitted diseases are prevalent in adolescents aged 15-24, and highest prevalence occurs in racial/ethnic minority groups, sexual and gender minorities, and those who inject drugs or have HIV (US Preventative Services Task Force, 2020). These groups of people present to clinics for testing but continue to perform high risk behaviors that increase their chances of getting STIs. Therefore, as a practitioner, it would be beneficial to encourage self-care management techniques before a patient test positive for STIs. One approach that I would use would be to give in-person behavioral counseling lessons, such as how to properly put on a condom, explain high risk behaviors, and safe sex practices (USPSTF, 2020). First, I would have to gain the adolescents trust and build a relationship to determine the risk for acquiring an STI. I think that giving pamphlets are helpful, but I cannot be sure that they will read them. Therefore, I would prefer in-person counseling by myself or refer to behavioral counseling by another person. Once education has been provided, I would ensure that I encourage vaccinations, such as HPV, abstinence, or limiting the number of sexual partners, in addition to practicing safe sex every time. Also, whether they have had any STIs, I would encourage that the get tested for STIs with each new sexual partner (encourage both going together to get tested prior to sexual activity), and follow-up testing if they have previous STIs.
