A client’s age at diagnosis may impact their desire or ability to engage in lifestyle or other changes to modify disease progress. What education would you provide to a client who is diagnosed with a chronic illness, like this client, in their 70s or 80s? What information would you provide about the impact of lifestyle changes such as improved diet, increased exercise, or smoking cessation later in life? I think I would first ask and assess their level of wanting to change. At this age in my experience, many people don’t care to make the changes necessary because they feel they are already at the end of their life. I would assess their desires and goals for their old age and see how they align with their actions. For instance, if I have an 85-year-old who has smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day since they were 12, the likelihood that I am going to change their ways is slim. If they feel their life has been fulfilled, they don’t have any further goals to reach, and their only wishes are to be comfortable and smoke their cigarettes, I can offer them some education, but support the fact that they are at peace with the direction in which their life is heading. If the patient wants to quit smoking for instance, I would first provide some education including the fact that smoking cessation can lower the risk of cancer, heart attack, stroke, and lung disease, as well as improving taste and smell (Sohlberg & Bergmark, 2020). I would also provide the information that quitting at a later age STILL provides benefits such as improved circulatory function, decreased in dyspnea and coughing, decrease in blood pressure and heart rate, and overall breathing will improve (Sohlberg & Bergmark, 2020). I would then provide different mechanisms that can aid in smoking cessation including tobacco replacement therapies such as e- cigarettes, medications such as Bupropion, psychotherapy,

make a change is supporting their wishes and really highlighting their desire to encourage them to do more, rather than dwell on “you should have started sooner”. Highlighting all the ways that their changes can still have positive impacts on their life is most important and could potentially enforce their newfound good habits.
