Performance Assessment Task 4: D Western Governors University Schools as Communities of Care-D A. I chose scenario 1 that is about Anthony. One issue Anthony is facing is a physical need by his lack of food. He rarely has a meal every evening at home and often steals other students’ food because he is starving. Another issue is how Anthony almost immediately loses interest in class work and then distracts the other students from their work by stretching and kicking. B1. I could address the issue of Anthony’s lack of food by making sure Anthony always has food to take home with him. For example, schools in my home town have free food pantries inside of the schools to supply poverty students with free feeding necessities. I could start (if the school doesn’t already have one) or utilize the school’s free food pantry for children that is always supplied with free food, snacks, and drinks for children who need it. Each week, I could send him home on Mondays with enough food to last the entire week. I could address the attention and distracting other students issue by using treats as an incentive. I would tell Anthony if he can sit still during the entire circle time and not disrupt other students by stretching or kicking them, that he can have a small candy bar or piece of candy as a prize. I could also address the not sitting still issue by taking Anthony for a short walk when he feels fidgety, then coming back to sit down and try to refocus. B2. One relevant legal obligation I would have to do is contact Child Protective Services about the lack of food, poor body odor, and continuously dirty clothing Anthony deals with because being a school teacher makes me a mandated reporter. A privacy concern I must think
about is keeping Anthony’s personal information he tells me private and not sharing with others unless I have his consent to. I also need to make sure he is comfortable enough with me to tell me about these kinds of things he deals with at home. B3. One strategy I would use for interacting with Anthony’s mother is calling her personal phone number to talk with her about Anthony’s school struggles and progress. I could also ask her what types of snacks or candy to use as incentives to encourage school work participation, and be sure there are no known food allergies to steer clear from when choosing the treats. Since they are poor, if his mother does not have a cell phone, I could send a note home in Anthony’s backpack for her to schedule an in-person meeting with me at a time that would work best for her to discuss Anthony’s performance and things that could be done to help him succeed. B3a. Since a lot of Anthony’s struggles come from a lack of food at home, I personally think using treats for him as an incentive is a great motivator to encourage school work completion and participation. The energy food gives us can also help with Anthony’s focusing problems. Taking Anthony for a walk when he becomes fidgety and can’t sit still or pay attention will give him some physical input, as well as a change of scenery for a few minutes. Having this small break may be enough of a period of reducing stress and collecting himself and all he needs to rejoin the class, improve his mental focus, and sit still. B4. Additional stakeholders that need to know about Anthony’s situation are the school principals and the school counselor. School principals should know about Anthony’s poverty and think of ways to help him, such as using some of the schools funding to buy him good clothing. The school counselor should know about Anthony’s situation so that she can help him improve his social-emotional growth. She can identify any social and emotional skills he lacks and teach him through demonstrations how to utilize these skills. For example, hearing about his
