CHOSEN TOPIC

The Assessment of the Coping Mechanism in Relation to Blended Learning Approach of Senior High School Students

RESEARCH QUESTION

How do Senior High Students cope with the new educational system approach?

SYNTHESIS/ SUMMARY

COVID-19 has dramatically reshaped the way global education is delivered. Millions of learners were affected by educational institution closures due to the pandemic, which resulted in the largest online movement in the history of education (Hindawi, 2021). As COVID-19 forced the requirement for social distancing, this outcome hit every sector significantly, which includes education. Students and teachers faced diverse challenges in these difficult times, giving rise to methods that can help avoid social interaction and at the same time, ensure the continuation of quality education. Blended learning combines modern learning technologies with traditional learning methods. It is defined as a formal education program that has made up of in-person classroom time as well as individual study online using e-learning software. The advantage of the blended learning is that it is more efficient, makes education more accessible, students can pace themselves, teachers can become more engaged with their students, plus this method is more fun for everyone (Accelerole, 2018). On the other hand, disadvantages are also evident. It is high maintenance cost, technological dependence, flaws in course design can lead to student confusion and isolation if not properly executed, and IT literacy can serve as a significant barrier for students attempting to get access to course materials (Priscila, 2020). Tests may overload or label children when what they really need are diagnostic evaluations and needs-based assessments that examine where they are now and what they need in the future across a variety of domains. As the pandemic occurs it doesn't just affect health problems but mostly the education. Students have been struggling and coping with a lot of difficulties in many aspects of their lives. Senior High School students who are in the mid stages of their academic careers cope with stress less effectively. This is largely a consequence of the fact that they do not yet possess appropriate life experience, and thus do not have sufficient competences in coping with difficult situations. This suggests that the administrations should pay particular attention to this group. An obligatory course on coping skills should be recommended for the senior high curriculum. This could improve students’ competences, wellbeing, and resilience (B. Wirkus, 2021).

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The factors in regulating the condition of the Senior High Students in the Blended learning approach will be described in terms of the sub-variables: (a) Given material; (b) Mode of answering; (c.) Frequency of answering; and (d.) Stress level.

In the research, this variable is seen to possess a hypothesized relationship with SHS students’ Stress Coping Mechanism. This hypothesized relationship is presented by the two headed arrows connecting both variables.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

  1. School routines are important coping mechanisms for young people with mental health issues. When schools are closed, they lose an anchor in life and their symptoms could relapse. “Going to school had been a struggle for [some children with depression] prior to the pandemic, but at least they had school routines to stick with”, said Zanonia Chiu, a registered clinical psychologist working with children and adolescents in Hong Kong, where schools have been closed since Feb 3. “Now that schools are closed, some lock themselves up inside their rooms for weeks, refusing to take showers, eat, or leave their beds.” For some children with depression, there will be considerable difficulties adjusting back to normal life when school resumes.
  2. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges throughout the nation were forced to replace face-to-face courses with remote courses in an extremely short period of time during the Spring 2020 semester. Many professors with no experience teaching from a distance attempted to replicate their face-to-face experience and complete the semester by delivering lectures through online video conferencing software. This development brought questions about the cost and quality of online instruction into the national limelight and presented policymakers with a window of opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of online education and consider what protections are needed for college students taking online courses.

Stress Coping Mechanism

SHS Students in the current Blended Learning: a. Given material b. Mode of answering c. Frequency of answering d. Stress level

  1. Educational system in the current pandemic crisis continuously encounters the affordability of education (or lack thereof). A big disparity in educational achievements is evident across various social groups. Socioeconomically disadvantaged students otherwise known as students who are members of high and low-income poverty-stricken families, have immensely higher drop-out rates in the elementary level. Additionally, most freshmen students at the tertiary level come from relatively well-off families.
  2. Globally, suicide among children is a significant preventable public health problem, and it is the second leading cause of death among younger people aged 10– years. In India, a student dies by suicide every hour, and 28 such loss of life occurs every day. During this COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, the suicidal tendency among school children is significantly rising. Since the beginning of lockdown (March–October), in Kerala, 173 children, aged 10–18 years, died by suicide. Similar reports from other parts of the world have also shown a significant increase in the deaths of children due to suicide during the lockdown period than the pre-lockdown period, claiming a 9.3%–33% rise in the number of children presenting with self-harm injuries as well.
