CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction Students’ satisfaction in an educational institution helps determine whether or not the implementation of their educational program is effective or not. Awareness of students’ satisfaction allows for amendments and improvements. Consequently, the more satisfied students are, the more they are likely to stay in that school and possibly promote it to others to enroll as well. The opposite goes if one is unsatisfied. A new study in the Journal of Business Research, found that student satisfaction has a dramatic impact on the perceived identity of an institution, and therefore a direct effect on the success of student recruitment efforts (“Why Student Satisfaction”, 2018). According to Ali and Ahmed (as cited in Afra and Dhaqane, 2016), satisfaction of a student can be determined from his level of pleasure as well as the effectiveness of the education that the student experiences. In this regard, satisfaction can be considered as the act of satisfying a need or desire in achieving a planned goal. With a recent change in school curriculum in the country, high schools including Ednas School of San Carlos, had to face a bigger challenge in terms of student satisfaction after the implementation of senior high school, an additional two-year program in the secondary level. According to Department of Education Secretary Leonor Briones (as cited in Montemayor, 2018), the main objective of the K to 12 program is to improve the quality of education in the country. Prior to its implementation, Philippines was the only country in Asia with a ten-year Basic Education Curriculum. Under K to 12, two more years are added as Grades 11 and 12 for senior high school
