Assignment no 2

Case study

For the sake of organizational improvement and hopes of getting competitive advantage over the competitors, management wants to implement the concept of “six sigma” in the organization. A team of Marketing and Operations department experts is formulated and are asked for their suggestions and opinion on this decision. Now you are required to provide the team of experts the recommendations on the basis of your knowledge of “Production and operations management” on the following domains:

  1. What are the factors that will explain that the organization is prepared for the deployment of “six sigma”? Provide suitable details to support your point. (15)
  2. What possible obstacles that the management have to face while implementation of “six sigma”. (15)

Solution:

Part 1: A successful implementation of “six sigma” in Allied Associates Pvt. Ltd depends on many factors like

  • Top-Down Support The top management of an organization largely influences the culture and policies of the company. If they don’t show the level of commitment and dedication themselves for the implementation of Six Sigma then how can one expect that the rest of the employees will show some commitment? It is almost predictable that some people in the organization will not accept the new initiative and may never be converted or resist to any change. However, support from the top management will make it possible to institutionalize the initiative as a part of the business.
  • Dedicated Resources In order to make Six Sigma work, the management of Allied Associates must commit dedicated managers to lead the projects and they also have the ability to mentor their subordinates who are working directly or indirectly to make process improvements. Six Sigma requires a dedication that must be focusing on process improvement so that day to day problems are solved once and for all.
  • Employee Incentive If we assume that the necessary support from the management of the organization exists, what will be the motivator that the rest of the employees also accept and internalize this new initiative or change? It can be the financial incentive and it can be tied to each employee’s performance evaluation or advancement. A system must be established by the management so as to ensure that the employees remain engaged in the process and this engagement will link them to the commitment to implement the concept of Six Sigma.
  • Business Aptitude Despite of the tools and methodologies that are needed to apply in any process regardless of the type of industry, the speed at which Six Sigma is accepted and understood by an organization may be a function of the type of business or industry. History shows that the early adopters of Six Sigma were manufacturing firms but recently the service industry has also adopted the philosophy of six sigma.
  • Essentials of Training Clearly, training is an essential part of a Six Sigma deployment. The aspects of the training plan that needs to be considered are appropriate training objectives, who will be the trainees? Which groups of employees need what duration and sort of training? Appropriate methods for training, duration of training, who will be the trainer and consultant? Selection criteria of trainers.
