Thesis Statement and Evolution
Rhet 233 * A. Herb
==========================================================================
Thesis statement example:
This essay will inquire about the writing process of Gloria Anzaldua and Ernest Hemingway. Specifically,
it will analyze the ESSPs, chronotopes, and role of emotion in their writings as a means to find certain tasks
common to both writers. Finding similarity and difference in their styles may prove an indicator of
elements student writers could espouse.
This essay will inquire about…in order to (or because)… .
Evolved thesis=incorporate negative information (yes that actually goes against your thesis).
You don’t simply want to prove your thesis. You want to refine your thesis throughout your essay.
Simple argument essays are passé.
Negative information—Hemingway states that emotions don’t necessarily play a part in his
writing.
Evolved thesis example:
While both writers use emotion in different ways, one can draw the conclusion that writing and emotion are
intricately linked. One major obstacle to studying the role of emotion in the writing process, is the writer’s
own reportability of the role of emotion in their process--both composing and inscribing. Questions for
further study: Is reportability the only means of identifying writer’s use of emotion in composing and
inscribing? Is the role of emotion different for composing and inscribing?
Need to have implications for evolved thesis too.
