PSYCHOLOGICAL

PERSPECTIVE OF

THE SELF

Balsamo & Awa (^) BSN 1A

In 1879, psychology is considered as a

scientific discipline; psychology is now

considered as the study of human

behavior and mental processes.

Psychology as a science is concerned

with how we developed our sense of

self over the course of its

development.

PSYCHOLOGY ''psyche" = soul or mind "logos" = study

The Self pertains to all things we feel, or think is ours. James proposed the duality of the self- the "Me-Self and I-Self". The Self is a construct which encompasses all aspects of the person-both tangible and observable and even the internal and more private aspects of the self. Me-Self and I-Self [WILLIAM JAMES] [WILLIAM JAMES]

The Self as the Knower. Also called as the "Pure Ego". The processor of information or the thinker, which allow one to be aware of the environment and one's existence within the environment. The Self as Known. Also called as the "Empirical Self". Further divided into three constituents; a.) The Material Self b.) The Social Self c.) Th Spiritual Self I-SELF ME-SELF

The ability to make clear boundaries

between our thoughts and feelings and

to choose which one of the two will

guide our behavior.

Differentiation of the selves is the

degree to which one is able to balance

a.) Emotional and Intellectual Functioning

b.) Intimacy and Autonomy in relationship

The Differentiated and Self [ Dr. Murray Bowen ] [DR. MURRAY BOWEN]

VIEW Balance autonomy and intimacy in their relationships. Can establish connection with others without losing one's self in the process. Flexible and are better able to adapt to stressful situations. Can set clear boundaries between their thoughts and feelings. Very attached to the roles they play in a relationship They have a few firmly held beliefs, compliant, seek, approval from others before making decisions. They find it difficult to think logically in emotionally intense situations and may make impulsive decisions based on their current emotional states. Highly Differentiated Self Poorly Differentiated Self

VIEW How we see ourselves. It is the self that feels most true to what and who we really are. It may not be perfect, but it is the part of us that feels most real. One's view of self as one wishes to be. Containts attributes, usually positive, that people aspire to posses. Real Self Ideal Self

Bandura is known for his theory- Social Cognitive Theory of Learning which asserts that human behavior can be learned not only through one's experience but also through the experiences of other people-we observe "modes" and learn from them.
