The line graph illustrates the changes in the proportion of people living in New Zealand in four different age groups from 1950 to 2050. Overall, the proportion of young people in New Zealand decreased gradually over the period, while the figures for the older groups showed an upward trend. The percentage of elderly citizens is expected to rise sharply and become one of the largest age groups by 2050. The percentage of people aged 15 to 43 in New Zealand began at 32% in 1950 and it was the largest group at that time. Then, it rose steadily and reached a peak at 45% in 1980, which was the highest figure among all categories during the entire period. After this peak, the proportion declined gradually, falling to about 30% in 2025. Similarly, the percentage of children aged 0 to 14, starting at nearly 28%, decreased gradually over the following decades. Currently, the rate stands at about 20% and is anticipated to decrease steadily until 2050, making it the smallest age group of the population. In contrast, the percentage of New Zealanders aged 35-64 stood at around 15% in 1950 and then remained relatively stable until about 1980, before starting to rise gradually in the following decades. By 2050, this group is projected to rocket to the highest rate of 34%. The proportion of New Zealand’ inhabitants aged 65 and over began at 10% in 1950, the lowest among all age groups at that time. Over the following decades, this figure stably remained. It is then expected to continue climbing sharply, reaching 25% by 2050

How electricity is produced from coal

The method for producing electricity, which is used to power devices and operate machines, is depicted in the illustration. Overall, the process contains several stages, beginning with mining of the coal from the underground mine to producing gas, generating electricity and supplying it to households and industries. At the beginning, coal is exploited by the miners. After that, it is transported to a crushing machine so as to break it into fine pieces. These crushed coal pieces are delivered by trucks to factories, where a gasifier heats them in order to transform the solid coal to gas. The process continues with the gas is sent to different plants to be cooled at low temperature with waste heat as a by-product and clean to remove any impurities. After being cleaned, the gas is moved to gas power plant to convert to electricity and the waste heat also is produced. At the end of the process, the produced electricity is distributed to households and factories for domestic and industrial usages.

Should high school students be allowed to bring smartphones to school? On the one hand, some people think smartphones affect students’ cognition and study results. Teachers argue that it makes students less active in class and depend on Artificial Intelligence to complete exercises, so the risks of cheating in exams will significantly increase. Parents also worry about their physical and mental health because using smartphones so much in their free time can lead to eye strain, poor posture and anxiety or addiction. On the other hand, some people feel mobile phones give students opportunities to read online books or search for information quickly. They also can broaden their knowledge by watching educational videos about wild animals, history or cultures of other countries, which makes them more interested in what they learn. By and large, parents can easily contact their children in emergency situations. I agree with the second opinion because it is a great way to support students’ learning, help them access helpful information more conveniently and contact with parents in case of emergencies.

Some people believe that schools should focus primarily on preparing students for employment, while others argue that education should aim to develop students as well-rounded individuals. Discuss both views and give your opinion. BP1: The increasing emphasis on technical and vocational training in schools is a direct response to the demands of labour market. The job market nowadays requires BP2: On the other hand, education that aims to shape well-rounded individuals cultivates qualities such as critical thinking, empathy and civic responsibility
