My primary concern is Access Speed and Wait Times. A significant drawback of public systems
is the existence of long waiting lists for non-urgent procedures and specialist consultations. This
delay can seriously affect patient health, as conditions might worsen while waiting. For example,
a diagnosis requiring specialized imaging or a necessary procedure might be postponed for
months.
Secondly, we see Limited Patient Choice. In many public systems, patients lack flexibility in
selecting their specific doctor or hospital. In Spain, in most cases they send you first to a family
doctor instead of treating you particularly.
To conclude, while the principle of universal access is valuable, the operational realities are
significant arguments against an exclusively government-run system.
