L SENTENCES

 The article has examples of imagined

situations and events – things thar are

different from what is true now or what

actually happened.

 Each sentence has two parts or clauses:

a main clause and an if clause.

 (^) What would you do if you saw a homeless person?

The if clause is a condition or an

imagined idea, and the main clause is

the result or the effect of it.

FIRST CONDITIONAL

If + present tense, future

 We use the First Conditional to talk about

future events that are likely to happen.

 The subordinate clause (If-clause) has a

verb in the present simple. The main

clause is always in the future.

 (^) If I don't study, I won't pass my exams  (^) If the weather is good, we'll go for a walk in the park.  (^) I will buy that CD if I have enough money.

When, if, unless

First conditional

We can use when, if or unless to talk

about the possibility of things

happening in the future.

 We use when for things we’re sure will

happen and If for things that may

happen

 (^) When I get home, I’ll watch TV  (^) If I get home before 8, I’ll watch the film

 (^) a) If you _______ (help) me with my homework, I _____ (finish) it in time to go to the cinema.  (^) b) If it ________ (not/rain), the students _______ (practice) sport in the playground.  (^) c) Jane _______ (come) home early if she ______ (not/be) very busy at work.  (^) d) Our teacher ______ (be) pleased if we _______(do) our homework.  (^) e) If Robert _______ (play) football with us, we ______(win) the match.

SECOND CONDITIONAL

If+past tense, would + infinitive  (^) We use the second conditional to talk about unreal or hypothetical situations that are unlikely to happen. The subordinate clause (If-clause) has the verb in the past simple. The main clause has the verb in the conditional form - would + infinitive (No “to”)  (^) If we won the lottery, we would buy a new car  (^) If I studied harder, I would get better results

The second conditional is used when the

speaker is imagining a situation that will

probably not happen.

 Think if the situation is a real possibility

for you or not.
