1. Topic : Demonstra<ves (7.1) 2. Grammar Overview : Demonstra<ves are a sec<on of determiners. A determiner is a class of word that forms an important part of many noun phrases. The determiner comes before the noun and helps to define it. A demonstra<ve is a class of determiner used to point out the person or thing referred to. Firstly, English has two demonstra<ve forms, this and that. Their main func<on is to express distance between the subject and the object. Moreover these forms have plural. The plural form of THIS is THESE and plural form of THAT is THOSE. They must agree just in number with the nouns that they are referring to because there isn’t a genre form. ARer that, we use this to: -‐ Talk about people or things close to us like "This is my jacket" or "This is my car". -‐ To introduce people : "This is my sister". -‐ And to introduce ourselves to begin a conversaBon on the phone : -‐ Hi, this is David”. Can I speak to Sally? On the contrary, we use that to: -‐ Speak about things and people that are not near to us : "That is my house". -‐ To refer to something someone said or did : -‐ Shall we go to the cinema? -‐ Yes, that's a good idea" This and that can be used as pronouns and as adjec<ves. When they act as pronouns they take the place of par<cular objects or people and when they act as adjec<ves they qualify a noun. It can be seen in the following example:
This car is be)er than this. ** In this example we can see both func<ons, the first is an adjec<ve because it goes with the noun and the second one is a pronoun because it takes its place** Other examples: ACT AS DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES -‐ This city is where she bought her new car. -‐These tomatoes are very tasty. -‐ That book is which I was talking about. -‐ Those women were at the beach this morning. ACT AS DEMONSTRATIVE PRONOUNS -‐This is too sweet for me. -‐ These are my friends. -‐That is your car. -‐Those are your neighbours.
