Thesis

Conflicts of interest are inevitable in both academic and professional contexts, as they arise from the intersection of personal values, institutional expectations, and competing goals. When individuals face situations in which their personal benefit conflicts with organizational or ethical principles, decision-making becomes emotionally charged and cognitively challenging. Effective management of these conflicts requires transparency, ethical awareness, and open communication.

Development

In academic and work environments, conflict situations often emerge when interests, responsibilities, or personal beliefs collide. For instance, in a workplace, a supervisor might be asked to evaluate a relative’s performance, which creates an obvious conflict of interest. Similarly, in academia, a professor who grades the work of a close friend could experience biased judgment. These examples demonstrate how conflicts of interest may compromise fairness and trust if not handled properly. According to Ainslie (1986), conflicts among personal interests are part of the “multiple self”, where short-term desires and long-term values compete for dominance. This theoretical approach explains why people often experience confusing and frustrating emotions when they must choose between what benefits them personally and what aligns with institutional integrity. During my professional experience, I once faced a situation where a colleague asked me to modify a student’s evaluation because she believed the score could affect the student’s scholarship. Although I understood her concern, I reported the request to the academic coordinator, explaining that such an action would contradict our institution’s ethical policies.
