MANUEL BELGRANO, “MYTHS AND TRUTHS OF HISTORY”
1) Read the text.
A progressive warrior was Manuel Belgrano with ideas of freedom and equality.
He was born in Buenos Aires in 1770, he studied at the San Carlos school, then he
went to Spain where he received his law degree with honors. He defended Bs As
from English invasions, participated in the May revolution and was a member of the
first government junta. Creator of the cockade and the flag took its colors from
other military forces.
He won in the battles of Tucumán y Salta but he lost in Vilcapugio and Ayohuma.
Manuel José Joaquín del Corazón de Jesús Belgrano was a diplomatic person
who took care of his appearance for such reason people believed that he was
effeminate.
He died in 1820 in absolute loneliness and poverty, didn´t get a luxurious burial
only a simple grave with a headstone made of marble and taken from a piece of
furniture in your house with five words: “Here lies General Belgrano”.
