ACT I
-The most important character between Roderigo and Iago is Iago. A stock character
that is always the same, with the same characteristics. The dramatic action is to
seduce the protagonist of the play to be evil.
-After England separate from the catholic church, Shakespeare plays are secular, not
religious.
-There are still traditions and some action that are related with morality plays.
-Iago id related with Santiago Matamoros and Othello is moor, so we can see that is a
little bit of racism in the play.
-The battle that it refers on the play is the Lepanto War.
-Othello is not Turk, he is Barbary refers to Africa or its possible that refers to the
north of Morocco.
-An idea of the Christians against the Turks.
Quarto and Folio editions: Plays were not meant to be published so they were a lot of
companies that perform them, we still have copies manuscripts of the scripts. A folio
station refers to the size of the edition, and the quarter edition id a quarter of a big
sheet, and you hace a DINA5. The first folio edition were published in and it is the
major sorce about Shakeasperare
In the first scene we have Roderigo and Iago that are talking about someone else, who
is Othello. Iago is character that will manipulate everyone, Aldo Othello and their
reasons is not just because he is a racist character, it will be for evil and also he
jealous and want a revenge of Othello
Othello is never mentioned as his name, everyone refers to him as the moor, the
lascivious moor, Rodrigo refers to him with the man of the thick lips, which also an
example of racist. The way that all the characters talk of him, say to us that Othello I
seen as a stranger, that don't belongs to the society.
Rodrigo is in love with Desdemona. In the second scene, they want to tell the senator
of Venice that Desdemona, his daughter, was married with Othello in secret and also
to tell him that they are having sex together, and Iago use a very disgusting language,
using animals to explain this situation.
Desdemona is Avery powerful character bacuse she is so independent.
The very last part os the scene one, and he tells to the audience that he has a plan
making him believe that he and Desdemona have an affair. Now, Othello is being
manipulated believing something that it isn’t true.
