8 Common Interview Questions
STAR Interview Response Method
Situation: Describe the situation that you were in or the task that you needed to accomplish. You must describe a
specific event or situation, not a generalized description of what you have done in the past. Be sure to give enough
detail for the interviewer to understand. This situation can be from a previous job, from a volunteer experience, or
any relevant event.
Task: What goal were you working toward?
Action: Describe the actions you took to address the situation with an appropriate amount of detail and keep the
focus on YOU. What specific steps did you take and what was your contribution? Be careful that you don’t describe
what the team or group did when talking about a project, but what you actually did. Use the word “I,” not “we”
when describing actions.
Result: Describe the outcome of your actions and don’t be shy about taking credit for your behavior. What
happened? How did the event end? What did you accomplish? What did you learn? Make sure your answer contains
multiple positive results.
1. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF
Education, Past Work Experience, Personal Experience (that is related to your work)
Not random, anything that can give the employer a good impression about you.
Concentrate on telling them about your work-related skills as opposed to your home life. They are not
interested in your home life.
Example:
I grew up in Madrid and I studied accounting. I also worked for an accounting firm for about eight months, and I
really enjoy numbers, so maybe that’s the exact reason, I love to solve them. Solving them is so much fun and in my
spare time, I really like reading and also go out jogging only if the weather allows me too.
2. WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS?
How positive you think about yourself
Again, focus on the person specification for the role you are applying for.
Say something different that makes you stand out from the other job applicants. Give an example of why
you are better than the other applicants and try to make yourself RELATABLE and REAL!
Example:
My strongest trait is attention to detail. I totally believe in planning and execution. In fact, even when I was in
college, I used to organize my week and many people have said that I am quite approachable, so I believe these are
my strengths.
3. WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES?
How to identify your weaknesses and how you can cover it up
Displaying negatives but also covering it with positives.
Anyone who tells the interview panel they have no weaknesses is telling porkies! We all have weaknesses.
Don’t give a weakness that is one of the key requirements of the role. For example, if punctuality and good
timekeeping are important, don’t tell the panel you struggle getting out of bed in the morning!
Example:
1. “I think my weakness is that I am way too detail oriented. I try to accomplish everything, and I just want
everything to be perfect, but then I realize that I’m losing out on time, so maybe that makes me submitting these
projects pretty late. So I think that’s one of the weaknesses.”
2. “I do have one weakness, and that is I sometimes get slightly irritated when people don’t carry out their work to a
high standard. Because I set myself high standards, I expect others to have them too, and this is not always the case.
Although it can irritate me at times, I have learned to just focus on my own job and do it to a consistently high

Result: Describe the outcome of your actions and don’t be shy about taking credit for your behavior. What happened? How did the event end? What did you accomplish? What did you learn? Make sure your answer contains multiple positive results.

  1. TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF
  • Education, Past Work Experience, Personal Experience (that is related to your work)
  • Not random, anything that can give the employer a good impression about you.
  • Concentrate on telling them about your work-related skills as opposed to your home life. They are not interested in your home life. Example: “I grew up in Madrid and I studied accounting. I also worked for an accounting firm for about eight months, and I really enjoy numbers, so maybe that’s the exact reason, I love to solve them. Solving them is so much fun and in my spare time, I really like reading and also go out jogging only if the weather allows me too.” 2. WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS?
  • How positive you think about yourself
  • Again, focus on the person specification for the role you are applying for.
  • Say something different that makes you stand out from the other job applicants. Give an example of why you are better than the other applicants and try to make yourself RELATABLE and REAL! Example: “My strongest trait is attention to detail. I totally believe in planning and execution. In fact, even when I was in college, I used to organize my week and many people have said that I am quite approachable, so I believe these are my strengths.”
  1. WHAT ARE YOUR WEAKNESSES?
  • How to identify your weaknesses and how you can cover it up
  • Displaying negatives but also covering it with positives.

  2. “I do have one weakness, and that is I sometimes get slightly irritated when people don’t carry out their work to a high standard. Because I set myself high standards, I expect others to have them too, and this is not always the case. Although it can irritate me at times, I have learned to just focus on my own job and do it to a consistently high

standard. Having said that, I have recently been trying to turn this weakness into something positive by helping other people within the working environment to improve. So, if I notice a member of the team struggling, or not performing to the required standard, I will always offer to help them improve, which I feel can only serve to have a positive impact on the organization and its goals overall.”

4. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS?

  • How committed are you going to be to this company
  • Don’t tell them you plan to have moved on from their company, either internally or externally.
  • Loyalty is very important to the vast majority of employers. Remember, they have to spend time, money and resources training you up in the role, so they will want to see a return from their investment.
  • Don’t tell them you want to be sitting where they are! Example: “Well five years from now, I think I would like to be in management position. Till then, I would like to gain practical experience and then eventually become a manager. Of course, I would like to share and learn a lot of new things form my team members.”
  1. WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT OUR COMPANY?
  • Go online, research about the company, learn about their products, history, etc. Example: “Oh well, your company is very well known for the customer service and you also won an award for the best service provider in the country. And of course, you also have great clientele, so that’s one of the best ways you can answer this question.” 6. HOW WELL DO YOU HANDLE CHANGE?
  • Would you be able to cope up with change? Example: “Well, of course, I can handle a change, because in my previous company, one of our bosses had to quit and there was this new boss who came in and he had completely changed our strategy of a project. So of course, I’m very flexible and hardworking too, so we managed it with our team efforts and definitely, the results were pretty good.” 7. Do you work well under pressure?
  • Do you get stressed out under pressure?
  • Try to give an example of when you have carried out a difficult/pressurized task under strict time constraints.
  • Give a specific example and don’t forget to use the STAR technique in your response. Example: “Well, definitely working under pressure or without pressure works the same for me. In fact, one of the companies that I was working, there was a project that was given to us which had to be completed in four days. Which usually takes ten days and the whole team is l like so stressed out, they panicked, and they just didn’t know what to do, but the I ensured that they settled down. We prioritized our work and in fact, in a very organized manner, we completed our project. Of course, we also worked late nights, but that definitely helped me to submit our project in four days. So I think working under pressure is not too bad for me.”
  1. HOW DO YOU MAKE IMPORTANT DECISIONS?
  • Your response when you have to make a very critical and important decision. Example: “Handling decisions is considered to be a little difficult, but I am sure I can do it because of my experience. I would rely on my experience, I would also weigh on the pros and cons. Of course, I would also take some advice from my team members and I’m sure that would help me to come to a decision.”
