Departament of English Studies, UCM Dra. Elena Martínez Caro (BRIEF) MOCK EXAM ENGLISH SYNTAX (December 201 8 ) NAME: …………………………………………………………….....................…………………….......................................…………….. A. Identify the AdvPs and PrepPs in the following clauses and analyse them into their syntactic functions (i.e. say what their structure is). In one case, the phrase forms part of a higher unit; indicate which:

  1. Quite obviously we need to get it replaced. m h AdvP
  2. He still relies rather heavily on his parents. h m h p c AdvP AdvP PrepP
  3. Who is the guy with the funny hat on?

with the funny hat on?

p c PrepP [This PrepP forms part of another phrase, the NP the guy... , functioning as a postmodifier (relative clause) in that NP] B. Describe the MIDDLE construction. Discuss and exemplify. The middle construction is an alternative construction to the passive. It is used in situations in which the passive voice would be appropriate but its VP is in the active voice (hence the name ‘middle’). In the middle construction the subject NP is a patient, rather than an agent, as in the active voice. In the middle construction the agent is never explicit. The middle construction comes in two types, those with and without an obligatory AdvP. In the first type (NP VP AdvP), the AdvP is obligatory in the construction (best analysed syntactically as NC) and it represents situations with a recurrent property. Examples of this first type of middle construction include: Silk irons well. This fibre washes easily. The knife cuts well. The car is steering badly. The second type of middle construction shows the pattern NP VP and is superficially identical to the intransitive construction. Examples include: The door opened. The car stopped. The spaghetti are cooking. The eggs are boiling.

The middle construction in both types often involves the use of verbs of domestic activities and is often expressed in Spanish with the use of se. C. (a) Underline the complements [of any type] in the following clauses and specify their type. (b) Indicate the type of construction the following clauses belong to.

1. He was desperately looking for his wallet for three hours. Monotransitive (also admitted: Intransitive) PrepO (also admitted: PrepC) 2. I immediately made myself some tea. Ditransitive IO DO 3. That proposal sounds quite interesting. Copular Cs D. Imagine you are at an optician’s. Below are some of the replies to a questionnaire. Provide the questions missing (some of them are wh-questions and some are yes/no questions):

  1. Where and when were you born?
  2. Do you take any medicine / painkillers?
  3. Do you wear glasses?
  4. How long have you been wearing them? E. For each of the following, construct a sentence by embedding the second clause in the position marked as [...] in the first clause:
  5. That they need help didn’t surprise us.
  6. They informed us that Mary had been insulted.
  7. Jane got him to do the washing-up. F. Identify cases of subordination and indicate their type in the following sentences. Refer to the following aspects: (a) Embedded vs. non-embedded subordination; (b) type of subordinate clause (clausal adjunct, non- restrictive relative clause, embedded complement clause, etc.); (c) type of clause (finite vs. non-finite cl.) (d) in embedded complement clauses, indicate the type of function in the matrix clause [For the key to this exercise, see Answer key Further practice on subordination on Moodle (unit 4)]
