BRITISH EMPIRE. The expansion started with Henry II.
The expansion began with WALES (11th and 12th centuries) ,
SCOTLAND (17 and 18 centuries)
IMPERIALISM -> COLONIALISM -> a period consequence of
imperialism -> implantation of settlements on distant
territories, which were sources of wealth. As a result, over
40 countries have English as the rst or co-ocial language.

EXPANSION AT A WIDER SCALE: US
(1607-1776) COLONIAL PERIOD. They renamed some countries
(New York, Jersey, Zealand...)
CARIBBEAN: early incursions brought slaves from Guinea. Thay
are now independent territories.
IRELAND: The expansion was a longer process, which gave
Britain a high amount of wealth.
INDIA AND PAKISTAN
SOUTH ASIA AND MIDDLE EAST
AFRICAN TERRITORIES. A lot of countries in Europe were trying
to get a part from Africa. (Fr,Ita,Germ, UK, Spain, Portugal...)
around 15th century. 16th SLAVES TRAFFICKING from Africa to
bring them to the Americas. They were free workers. Mostly
western Africans.
-FIRST BRITISH COLONY WAS SIERRA LEONE (1787).
Filántropos. Most of their slaves came from here.

  • THE 1950s. Consumer Culture. People in middle-class had money enough to improve their lives (holidays (package holidays), cars, radio and TV, free time, cafes...). Industries took advantage of that. NEW MASS CULTURE, popular culture, new costumes.
  • (^) New music, beginnings of rock and pop music (Elvis)
  • THE 1960s. POP CULTURE. Feminist revolution, and sexual liberation for both genders. Change of roles. Hippie movement: rebels against social, gender, parents expectations.
  • Fashion. Women sowed their liberation through clothes, bikinis...fashion was even a battlefield for gender struggle. They wanted to break free from the patriarchal authority.
  • Birth controlling against free love/sexual liberation.
  • (^) ''Youthful Britain''. Before FREE HIGHSCHOOL, teens had to work. They were adults. In the 60s, they started to study.
  • (^) Redistribution of home roles.

COMMONWEALTH OF NATIONS.

  • Start of Movements for independence (Indian non-violent movement leathered by Gandhi)
  • 1947 India parts in two.
  • 1970s. Women keep fighting, young movements continue...
  • World oil crisis by the end of the century

NORTHERN IRELAND

THE 1980s.

RAISE OF THE NEW LABOUR. Changing ideology, socialist policies, embrace capitalism. They

became more center to gain votes.

  • COOL BRITANNIA -> rebranding Britain, move from heritage to a dinamic progressive nation, innovation, creative cultural industries...
  • (^) Committee of Cool = musicians, fashion designers, famous people who helped Tony Blair create the cool Britannia.
