Task 1
1. Using the PDF book PostColonial Studies: The Key
Concepts, answer the following questions:
2 0
1 0
a) Explain briefly the difference between “Settler Invader”
2 0
1 0
colonies and colonies of “occupation exploitation.
The settler-invaders arrived to a land with indigenes but they annihilated them
so the majority of inhabitants were non-indigenous; while the colonies of
occupation are indigenous territories which remained but were administrated
by foreign people.
b) To which of these categories does Canada belong and why?
Canada belongs to the invader colonies. The reason why is because they
went to Canada and set without asking. They brought slaves from Africa
to work for free.
c) Explain the consequences of colonialism in terms of race, sex,
and for the settler colonies.
Race is accompanying racism and prejudice, which meant they could treat
slaves as they will with the excuse that they wanted a ‘good race’.
The non-indigenous inhabitants of settler colonies had the idea of a
cultural inferiority, characterized as a degeneration because of the lack of
contact with other races, (as in the case of with Creoles).
2. Read Moodie’s text and explain briefly
a) The impact of Nature on the community portrayed.
Some nature aspects of the new land that had influence on the community are
its proximity to the mother country, its exemption from taxes, its commercial
advantages, its climate, its soil, and some water privileges.
b) The point Moodie makes about migration to Canada.

Task 1

1. Using the PDF book Post‐Colonial Studies: The Key Concepts, answer the following questions:

2 0 a) Explain briefly the difference between “Settler1 0 Invader” 2 0 colonies and colonies of “occupation1 0 exploitation.”

The settler-invaders arrived to a land with indigenes but they annihilated them so the majority of inhabitants were non-indigenous; while the colonies of occupation are indigenous territories which remained but were administrated

by foreign people.

b) To which of these categories does Canada belong and why?

Canada belongs to the invader colonies. The reason why is because they

went to Canada and set without asking. They brought slaves from Africa

to work for free.

c) Explain the consequences of colonialism in terms of race, sex, and for the settler colonies.

Race is accompanying racism and prejudice, which meant they could treat slaves as they will with the excuse that they wanted a ‘good race’. The non-indigenous inhabitants of settler colonies had the idea of a cultural inferiority, characterized as a degeneration because of the lack of contact with other races, (as in the case of with Creoles).

2. Read Moodie’s text and explain briefly

a) The impact of Nature on the community portrayed.

Some nature aspects of the new land that had influence on the community are

its proximity to the mother country, its exemption from taxes, its commercial advantages, its climate, its soil, and some water privileges.

b) The point Moodie makes about migration to Canada.

Moodie does not talk directly about immigration, she refers to show that with teamwork and help from everyone is easier to save obstacles. And obtaining an efficient teamwork, people shouldn’t have to repel others. This migration to Canada took place because they wanted a better lifestyle with better conditions.

3. Read carefully the PDF “Literary Analysis: The big 5 Basic Elements of Literature: PLOT– CHARACTER – SETTING – POINT OF VIEW – THEME” and Armstrong’s “This is a Story” and…

a) Look up the meaning of the term “trickster” in the dictionary and explain what character in the story responds to this definition - why.

The character that probably sticks into this definition is Kyoti because a “trickster” is an alchemist, someone who creates realities in the duality of time and illusion. Is a god, a spirit or an anthropomorphic animal that disobey mortal rules and in the story he appears as a hero trying to help.

b) Explain whether you see any refection in the story of the following statement found in Ashcroft, et al.’s definition of First Nations: “ In general, members of First Nations make no claim to 2 0 nation1 0 state status but to a communal identity that in fact precedes the 2 0 nation1 0 state, and in particular the colonial nations of Canada and the US.”

It has a similitude with the way the indigenous people react when the settler-invaders came. They didn’t claim any jurisdiction of their lands but they wanted to keep their identity as a community and that is what the story argues about.

c) What is the narrative voice like and how would you describe the style used?

The narrative voice is an Indian woman who tries to keep the spirit of Kyoti alive by telling his story. She uses the third person omniscient so as to letting the reader know every detail of the story. The way she expresses herself is very characteristic, prototypically for an Indian. For example, she uses the name of Kyoti several times in the same paragraph as if she were talking telegraphically, sentence by sentence.

d) What are the characters like (Round, flat)?
