Phrasal Verbs – Vocabulary
Name: Vanessa Salazar Course: 2 BGU “B”
"Phrasal Verbs" are combinations of verbs and particles (such as
prepositions or adverbs) that form a different meaning than the verbs
alone. They are essential in vocabulary, and are widely used in
everyday conversations, formal and informal writing, as well as in
professional contexts.
Structure: A phrasal verb consists of a verb followed by one or two
particles. For example, "turn on", "give up", "look forward to", etc.
Types of particles:
Prepositions: such as "on", "off", "in", "out", etc.
Adverbs: such as "up", "down", "away", "back", etc.
Meaning: The meaning of a phrasal verb can be literal or figurative,
and is often not evident simply by breaking down the individual
words. For example, "turn on" means "turn on" literally, but "give up"
means "give up" figuratively.
Usage: Phrasal verbs are used in all tenses and can be transitive or
intransitive. For example:
Transitive: " She turned on the lights."
Intransitive: "The light turned on."
List of phrasal verbs: There are hundreds of phrasal verbs in
English, and they are used in a variety of contexts. Some are very
common and others more specific.
Separable and inseparable phrasal verbs: Some phrasal verbs
can be separated if a pronoun is used between the verb and the
particle. For example:
Separable: "She turned the lights on." (Transitive)
Inseparable: "She turned on the lights."
