Intransitive verbs Are verbs that can’t have an object, so they can’t be used in passive form. Some verbs: smile, happen, sleep, die, swim, cry, work, laugh, talk… 5. Passive with 2 objects One object becomes the subject and the other remains (imita) the object Example: Active: the teacher gave Willie the solution Passive I: The solution was given to Willie by the teacher Passive II: Willie was given the solution by the teacher 6. Impersonal and infinitive forms Structure: It + Be + Past Participle + That + sentence Examples: They believe that the thief got away > It is believed that the thief got away They think that sales are going up > It is thought that sales are going up They spread a rumour that the shop will close > It is rumoured that the sop will close They reported that the shoplifters have been arrested > It was reported that the shoplifters have been arrested
Use: when somebody does a task for you. Structure: Person who receives the task + have / get + object + Past participle + (by argent) Examples: I had my car fixed by the mechanic I had my temperature taken by the nurse I got my hair cut Get: when the task received is positive Have: when the task received is negative or positive
- Passive infinitive: Structure: object + verb in passive + (Be + ppl) + To Be + complement People believe that Maria is the best teacher Examples: Impersonal= it is believe that Maria is the best teacher Infinitive= Maria is believed to be the best teacher
