1. UNREAL USES OF PAST TENSE
WISHES/REGRETS
●I WISH / IF ONLY + past simple= wishes in the present or future
ex: I wish I wasn’t studying
If only you were here…
●I WISH / IF ONLY + past perfect = a regret about the past
ex: I love travelling, If only I had traveled more!
I wish I hadn’t copied in the exam, now I have a zero…
●I WISH / IF ONLY + subject + would + infinitive = talk about something we
want to happen or stop happening ( it annoys us)
ex: If only he would stop screaming all day
I wish the bus would come earlier!
PREFERENCES
● SAME SUBJECT (un mateix) :
subject + WOULD RATHER + infinitive/present perfect
ex: I would rather stay at home today (now)
I would rather have seen her (last week, last month)
●DIFFERENT SUBJECT ( dues persones):
subject + WOULD RATHER + past simple (now)/past perfect (years ago)
ex: I would rather you had bought a bigger car
IT’S TIME/HIGH TIME
● IT’S TIME / HIGH TIME (més expressiu) + past simple= to say something that
has to be done
ex: It’s time you found a job…
quan està en infinitiu :It’s time to go to bed és perquè no s’especifica qui fa
l’acció
