Basic features of the classical (realistic text):
Well-defined characters: character-centred narratives
The world is knowable and susceptible of rational enquiry.
Spatio-temporal and moral guidance. Hierarchy of voices and
discourses.
Structuring principles: chronology, causality and teleology. Movement
forward.
Tension between advance and delay (suspense) and between
information and lack of it (surprise).
Complementary way of looking at a narrative text
Basic structure of enigma (or conflict, the agon”) and resolution.
Events bring about changes and transformations, leading to a new
order or equilibrium. Closure.

THE CLASSICAL NARRATIVE TEXT

  • Basic features of the classical (realistic text):
    • Well-defined characters: character-centred narratives
    • The world is knowable and susceptible of rational enquiry.
    • Spatio-temporal and moral guidance. Hierarchy of voices and discourses.
    • Structuring principles: chronology, causality and teleology. Movement forward.

Complementary way of looking at a narrative text

Basic structure of enigma (or conflict, the “ agon ”) and resolution. Events bring about changes and transformations, leading to a new order or equilibrium. Closure.

CLOSURE

  • Narrative conflicts and culture and society.
  • Closure and endings. Serials, “prequels”.
  • Suspense and surprise. Information gaps and ellipses.
  • Ideological and rhetorical power of closure.
  • Roland Barthes’s narrative codes: 1) “proairetic code” (expectations and

actions) and 2) “hermeneutic code” (questions and answers)

  • Closure at the level of expectations (genre). Violation of expectations

giving way to surprise (also gaps). Hitchcock’s Psycho and The Birds.

  • Closure at the level of questions and answers (red herrings, partial

answers).

  • Absence of closure
