and Hypothetical Situations
Jess Harris
● Use the future perfect passive. ● Express hypothetical results. ● Use impersonal possessive adjectives. ● Talk about reasons and causes.
● Express impersonal beliefs. ● Use complex adverbs. ● Describe outcomes of a situation. ● Ask questions with complement clauses.
In this course you will learn how to:
● Used to talk about something that will be completed by a particular time in the future.
● We make an educated guess or a prediction, based on what we know.
Future Perfect
Friday this week - Finished recording.
Past Present^ Future
I will have finished this course by Friday next week.
Example
● Active: I will have finished this course by Friday next week.
● Passive: This course will have been finished by Friday next week.
● This project will have been completed by next month.
● The blog will not have been written by the end of the day.
● Future Perfect (Active or Passive) always needs a future time or a deadline.
● In passive, the focus is on the object that receives action, so it comes first in the sentence.
Roleplay
● We use it to talk about things that did NOT happen.
● Often used to express past consequences of unrealistic situations.
If he had taken a taxi, he would
have arrived on time for his flight.
The structure:
● Like any conditional sentence, it has 2 parts or clauses. ● If clause & main clause.
● If + past perfect (had + past participle) ● main clause = would have + past participle
● If you had studied harder, you would have received better scores.
● Past Perfect
● would have + past participle
Make a Third Conditional sentence for this situation:
Your friend forgot his laptop charger at home and couldn’t attend a workshop at the university.
Possible Answers
● If you had remembered to bring your charger, you would have attended the workshop.
● If you hadn’t forgotten to bring your charger, you wouldn’t have missed the workshop.
