Today we’re going to compare the two main ways to join an enterprise. As you know, the options are Apprenticeship or Graduate.
We’re going to focus our presentation in British Airways. Let’s have a main idea about this company.
As you may know, is the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom. It is the largest airline in the UK based on fleet size, international flights and international destinations.
The company was established in 1974 to control four important airline corporations, two were national and the other two were regional British companies. Since its foundation it was governmental but in 1987 it was privatized. Its main hub is located in London Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, but the company’s headquarters are in Waterside Harmondswort, England.
The company expanded his power and market influence in 1987 with the acquisition of British Caledonian and Dan-Air in 1992.
British Airways is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance. On 12 November 2009, British Airways confirmed that it had reached a preliminary agreement to merge with Iberia.
Sete:
For British Airways all “Apprenticeships” must include the following elements to be part of the company:
A competencies qualification which must be achieved by the apprentice to qualify for an Apprenticeship certificate, and which is the qualification required to demonstrate competence in performing the skill.
The apprentices must have a technical knowledge qualification which is the qualification required to demonstrate achievement of the technical skills, knowledge and understanding of theoretical concepts and knowledge and understanding of the British Airways industry and its market relevant to the skill. Sometimes an Apprenticeship framework may have an integrated qualification which combines competence and technical knowledge elements in which each element is separately assessed.
A module on employee right, responsibilities, personal learning and thinking skills
Since 1 October 2012 an apprentice will have to complete Functional Skills (e.g. Maths and English) qualifications or a GCSE with enhanced content (e.g. Maths and English).
Apprentices who have started an apprenticeship before the end of September 2012 will need to complete either Key Skills or Functional Skills. Apprentices who have already achieved the appropriate GCSEs at grade C and above will be given an exemption.
Àlex (amb una mica de col·laboració d’Oriol Llimona):
An apprenticeship is a kind of training where you develop real job with the objective of learning and getting qualifications, based in a system of structured competency. It allows to the apprentice to gain technical knowledge, real practical experience and personal skills. These are acquired through a mix of learning in the work place, formal off the job training and the opportunity to practice and embed new skills in a real work context.
Now I will talk about two types of apprenticeships programs in the British Airways company.
The first one is the “Head Office” program:
This program is based in the preparation of the apprentice to acquiring skills working at the Head Office, also known as Headquarters (HQ). The program also requires a vital business support from the apprentice, because is in the Head Office where the work is done with the objective of ensuring the operations to run smoothly. Basically, this program offers an improvement of your skills needed to succeed in a business support role, also having the chance to pursue a Business Administration qualification at level 2/3.
The second one is the “World Cargo” program:
This program offers training and improvement of the skills adequate to the work for the World Cargo. A very important part of the service offered by British Airways is the cargo transport around the world. The most important parts in this program is the improvement in the warehousing skills alongside working in a live operational environment that delivers airfreight to over 200 destinations around the globe. The World Cargo in British Airways has a very important role, because of its experienced operational and commercial teams worldwide.
