VIDEO WORKSHEET (1)
THE AUDIOLINGUAL METHOD
(connection with Topic 1)
As mentioned in Reading 1 (p. 5), the audiolingual method drew its rationale from
Behaviourism. This theory viewed language as a collection of habits. As a result,
learning a language was a process of habit formation.
This video session shows how English is taught/learn as a L2 following this method
(source:

1. What is the lesson about? What is/are the aims of the lesson?
2. What skills are practised? In what order?
3. How are structured patterns of language taught/learnt? (Try to be as specific as
possible)
4. Is there any grammatical point in the session? At what stage of the session is it
introduced? What two “grammar drills” are used?
5. Are mistakes corrected? How?
Part II: The principles underlying the audiolingual method (as summarised at the end by
Diane Larsen Freeman)
