People say that one of the best ways to broaden the mind is to learn
a foreign language and travel widely. What do you think?
Learning a new language can improve creativity, helps developing mental processes and
grows appreciation for other cultures, customs, and traditions. The main question is:
does global citizenship affect our identity?
It is generally believed that becoming global citizens, makes people less likely to
promote their country’s interests.
British Prime Minister Theresa May once said: If you believe you are a citizen of
everywhere, you are a citizen of nowhere’. This could be true if a person is not opened
to focus his journey on approaching the culture of the country he is visiting. It is not
about forgetting your identity, instead global citizens'nurture respect for others, and,
wherever they are, they take the best from each experience they live comparing them to
the ones they have lived in their country.
Nonetheless, the purpose of travelling is to take people out of their comfort zones
and'inspires them to see, try new things, and imbibe fresh insights even when it seems
frightening.
In relation to what it has been said before about being a global citizen, sometimes
travelling around the world for work will confront you having to master conversations
in different languages. Although, being the employee who fluently speaks foreign
languages, will get you the chance to travel for free!
Taking these points into consideration, travelling and learning a new language will
broaden not only your education but also your life’s horizons while you are exploring
everything the world has to offer.
Speaking personally, I have travelled a lot by myself since I was 18 and I firmly believe
that I have learned more about the culture, the language and the country while being
alone there because in my view the more unfamiliar the experience is, the more you are
learning.
To learn a language is to have one more window from which look at the world.
