  • There are some boys playing on the soccer fields. Can you see them?

Quando precisamos substituir/retomar o objeto de uma oração, usamos os objects pronouns.

1. We are going to the club and Paul is coming with ________.

2. Speak to Gustavo and tell _____ the news.

3. Give ______ this book. I need it.

4. Where is Pedro? I need to see _____.

5. Volleyball is my favorite sport. I love _______.

6. Lana has just had an operation. Let’s go visit _____.

7. Come to my place. I want to watch the game with _____.

  • Hey! This purse is mine.
  • This cat is yours. You should take care of it.
  • Tom created his internet magazine.
  • We want to create ours.
  • My girlfriend normally remembers my birthday and I usually forget hers.
  • Thereupon, the rabbit replied that the mistake was neither its, nor of the other animals.
  • The bank account was really theirs.

Ao contrário dos possessive adjectives, os possessive pronouns não são seguidos de substantivo, pois o estão substituindo.

Compare:

 She is my friend.  She is a friend of mine.

  • Who’s he?
  • Oh, he is a professor of mine.

 Utilizado para identificar uma pessoa em um grupo.

 Possessive adjective = of + possessive pronoun.

 Representam (uma) coisa(s). Podem estar perto ou longe em distância ou em tempo.

  • perto: this, these
  • longe: that, those  1.Sempre identificam nomes, sejam eles mencionados ou não. “I can’t believe this.”  2.Usados para descrever animais, lugares ou coisas, mas também podem descrever pessoas quando são identificadas. “This sounds like Mary singing.”  3.Podem ser usados no lugar de um nome.

 “Rio Grande and Pelotas are both located in the southernmost part of Brazil. This is known by its traditional sweets, while that, by the seafood.”

 “Cows and horses are both useful animals; these(=horses) carry us from one place to another, and those(=cows) give us milk.”

Quando dois substantivos são mencionados numa oração anterior, THIS refere ao último e THAT, refere ao primeiro.

O reflexive pronoun se refere ao sujeito da frase. É utilizado quando objeto e sujeito são iguais.

  • I cut myself while I was shaving.
  • You’re going to have to drive yourself to school today.
  • He spoke to himself in front of the mirror.
  • She blames herself for that accident.
  • The refrigerator defrosts itself.
  • We made ourselves a delicious meal.
  • They are doing it themselves.

 Examples:

  1. Right or left? Neither!

  3. I’m not studying French anymore. Neither is Anna.
  4. I still don’t have any plans for next holiday. – Me neither. 5. Neither you, Leonard, nor the girls were invited to the party.
