A The research method being used is the correlational method because it involves measuring the relationship between two or more variables. It also does not manipulate any of these variables, which only allows for associations to be reached. This results in causation to not be established through the findings. B The operational definition of positive first impressions are quantified by the observation of a pair of perticipants constructing a lego set: based off of likeability, trustworthiness, and competence. For example, if a participant demonstrated signs of untrustworthiness to their partner, and incompetence in being able to build the lego set, they would be considered to not have a positive first impression on the other person. A participant who showed signs of likability and competence while building would then leave a great positive first impression on their partner. C One correlation that was identified in the study is the relationship between the ToM skills observed and the positive first impressions related to likeability and trustworthiness. It was observed that as a participant had more ToM skills, they then were seen as having higher likeability and trustworthiness; therefore, making them have a better first impression. D One ethical guideline applied by the researchers is that they did not do any harm to their participants. This is shown when the subjects were only brought in and took brief tests and constructed a lego set. This allows for
this experiment to not cause any lasting harmful effects to participants, conforming to ethical guidelines. E The research is not generalizable because the sample included only college students, and they were from a single college, which makes us unable to generalize to our population of all people, not just college students from that specific university. Also all of the data collected from this study was reported through the researcher’s subjective interpretation of the participant’s first impressions on another person just based on three categories. So, due to the unrepresentable sample, as well as the potential biases, the research is not generalizable. F The hypothesis is supported. The results of the study back this up because the results show that the data collected supports their hypothesis by being what they predicted. They first predicted that ToM skills would have a great impact on a participant’s first impression. Through their study, it then turned out that this was true, with the participants with more ToM skills having a greater first impression on average. Thus, the data collected can fully support the hypothesis, as the results obtained from the study correlate in the same direction.
