Notes:
- Sample size is 272,003 individuals
- Population is for all U.S. high school students
- Sample is deemed representative
A
The research method being used is the correlational method because it
involves measuring the relationship between two or more variables. It also
does not manipulate any of these variables, which only allows for
associations to be found. This results in causation to not be established
through the findings.
B
The operational definition of the cognitive abilities of the students is quantified
by their results within the intelligence tests that they took. For instance, if a
particular student were to score above the average on the test compared to
their peers, then they would be considered to have a high amount of
cognitive abilities. So, if the average score on the test was 50%, and a
student scored 80%, they would then be considered to have high
intelligence and cognitive abilities.
C
Two very miniscule correlations were identified within the study. First, it was
found that the average absolute correlation between birth order and
personality is 0.02. Additionally, the absolute correlation between birth
order and intelligence was 0.04. This highlights that these variables share
little to no correlation at all, as these values are not statistically significant
in the slightest.
D
One ethical guideline applied by the researchers is the use of informed
consent. This is shown when the subjects were informed about the purpose
of the study, and voluntarily consented to the study afterwards. This allows
for this experiment to not cause any lasting harmful effects to participants,

conforming to ethical guidelines. It also included the ensuring of the confidentiality of the participants’ information, as well as the ability to opt out at any time. E The research is generalizable because the sample contained a significantly vast amount of a wide range of U.S. high schoolers from across the country (272,003), which makes us able to generalize to our population of all U.S. high school students. While all of the data collected from this study was self-reported by the participants, the data collected significantly shows little to no correlation. This in turn makes the data have a very low chance to be affected significantly by the social biases attributed to self-reported data. This, coupled with the sheer size of the sample, leads one to suggest that the data accumulated from this study is generalizable to the population. F The hypothesis is supported. The results of the study back this up because the results show that the data collected shows little to no correlation to each other. They originally predicted that birth order would have little correlation with the factors of personality and intelligence due to the prior studies conducted in this area. Through the experiment, they found only small differences in personality traits and intelligence scores among first-borns, middle children, and last-borns. Thus, the data collected fully supports the hypothesis, as the results obtained from the study show little to no correlation with the variables measured. An interesting piece of data to note is that factors such as parental socioeconomic status and gender actually show more correlation than the variables measured in their relationship to birth order.
