Review of Related Literature and Conceptual Framework

As a researcher, one of your tasks is to situate or locate your study in the existing broader or larger body of literature available. Does your study build on, extend or refute existing studies? Or, does your research replicate studies that have been done already?

By situating your research in the larger body of literature or existing knowledge, you get a sense, replicates as to whether your study builds on existing studies, replicates studies done already or offers an entirely new area of inquiry. Hence, the review of related literature and conceptual is an important task that you need to accomplish as part of your research training

What’s In

Directions. On the first column, list the things that you know about literature. On the

second column list the things that you want to know about literature.

Pointers in Selecting Related Literature

  1. Choose previous research findings that are closely related to your research.
  2. Give more weight to studies done by people possessing expertise or authority in the field of knowledge to which the research studies belong.
  3. Consider sources of knowledge that refer more to primary data than to secondary data.
  4. Prefer getting information from peer-reviewed materials than from general reading materials.

Conceptual Framework is recipe or a blueprint that provides an outline of how you plan to conduct the research.

Steps in developing a conceptual framework

  1. Conduct a review of literature
  2. Create a flow chart
  3. Write a narrative A Citation is the way you tell your readers that certain materials in your work came from another source. It also gives your readers the information necessary to find the source you used as it provides the following information:
  4. The name of the author
  5. The title of the work
  6. The name and location of the company that published your copy of the source
  7. The date your copy was published
  8. The page numbers of the material you are borrowing Hypothesis is defined as an educated prediction that provides an explanation for an observed event. An observer event is a measurable result or condition. If you can’t measure it then you can’t form a hypothesis.
