Research Methodology: Foundations for Effective Decision-Making, Lecture notes of Research Methodology

A comprehensive overview of research methodology, covering key concepts such as the definition of research, the scientific method, the purpose of research, and the importance of research skills for managers. It delves into the sources of knowledge, including research, experience, tradition, authority, and intuition. The document also defines essential research terms like population, sample, variables, data, and hypothesis. It outlines the components of the research process, from identifying the research area to report writing. This resource is valuable for students and professionals seeking to understand the foundations of research methodology and its applications in the business decision-making context.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY NOTES
Definition of researeh
Different authors have defined research as follows:
โ— Research is carrying out a diligent inquiry or a critical examination of a given
phenomenon.
โ— Research involvesa critical analysis of existing conclusions or theories with regard to newly discovered
facts i.e. it's a continued search for new knowledge and
understanding of the world around us.
โ— Research is a process of arriving at effective solutions to problems through systematic collection,
analysis and interpretation of data.
What is Business Research?
It is a systematic inquiry whose objective is to provide information to solve managerial problems.
Research and Scientific Method
The scientific method encourages a rigorous, impersonal mode of procedure dictated by the demands of
logic and objective procedure. It is based on the following basic postulates:
โ— It relies on empirical evidence
โ— It utilizes relevant concepts
โ— It is committed to only objective considerations
โ— It presupposes ethical neutrality i.e. it aims at nothing but making only adequate and correct
statements about population objects
โ— It results into probabilistic predictions
โ— Its methodology is made known to all concerned for critical scrutiny and for use in testing the
conclusions through replication.
โ— It aims at formulating most general axioms or what can be termed as scientific
theories.
Purpose of Research
โ— To discover new knowledge

What is Business Research? It is a systematic inquiry whose objective is to provide information to solve managerial problems. Research and Scientific Method The scientific method encourages a rigorous, impersonal mode of procedure dictated by the demands of logic and objective procedure. It is based on the following basic postulates: โ— It relies on empirical evidence โ— It utilizes relevant concepts โ— It is committed to only objective considerations โ— It presupposes ethical neutrality i.e. it aims at nothing but making only adequate and correct statements about population objects โ— It results into probabilistic predictions โ— Its methodology is made known to all concerned for critical scrutiny and for use in testing the conclusions through replication. โ— It aims at formulating most general axioms or what can be termed as scientific theories. Purpose of Research โ— To discover new knowledge

โ— To describe a phenomenon โ— To enable prediction. โ— To enable control i.e. the ability to regulate the phenomenon under study. โ— To enable explanation of a phenomenon i.e. accurate observation and measurement of a given phenomenon. โ— To enable theory development and validation of existing theories. Theory development involves formulating concepts, laws and generalizations about a given phenomenon. โ— Research provides one with the knowledge and skills needed for the fast-paced decision-making environment Why Managers need Better Information โ— Global and domestic competition is more vigorous โ— Workers, shareholders, customers and the general public are demanding to be included in company decision-making. โ— Organisations are increasingly practicing data mining and data warehousing. โ— Communication and measurement techniques within research have been enhanced. โ— The quality of theories and models to explain tactical and strategic results is improving โ— The power and ease of use of today's computers to analyze data, which help in decision-making,. โ— There are more variables to consider in every decision. โ— More knowledge exists in every field of management. Sources of Knowledge โ— Research โ— Experience: Empiricists attempt to describe, explain, and make predictions through observation. โ— Tradition: Rationalists believe all knowledge can be deduced from known laws or basic truths of nature

โ— Hypothesis: It is a researcher's anticipated explanation or opinion regarding the result of the study. โ— Theory: It is a set of concepts or constructs and the interrelations that are assumed to exist among those concepts. It provides the basis for establishing the hypothesis to be tested in the study. โ— A construct is an image or idea specifically invented for a given research and/or theory-building purpose โ— A concept is a bundle of meanings or characteristics associated with certain events, objects, conditions, situations, and behaviors. Concepts have been developed over time through shared usage Components of research

  1. Identification of the research area and topic.
  2. Statement of the problem.
  3. Literature review.
  4. Methodology design
  5. Sampling frame and sampling techniques.
  6. Data collection tools, design and techniques.
  7. Data analysis methods.
  8. Report writing techniques.
