Reverse Engineering A Conversation
Active listening is just as important in a conversation as getting our own point across.
Having a discussion with another person is almost like a dance, especially a conversation that
turns into an argument. When a conversation turns into an argument, we have a choice to make.
We can either overly appease the other person to end the conversation, we can be brutally honest
to make sure our point gets across, we can actively listen to the other persons side, or we can
clarify the problem and figure out a way to create a common ground between the two sides.
These types of conversation strategies can be gauged on a conversation meter. The categories I
have described above are pretense, sincerity, accuracy, and authenticity. In pretense, the focus is
to avoid difficulties. One may intentionally lie in order to decrease a threat in the conversation.
In sincerity, one can tend to be brutally honest and knock heads with the other person to get their
opinion across. In this category, the person does not care about hearing the other persons side of
the argument and does not tend to care about the other persons feelings. These two categories are
the lower side of the conversation scale. Our goal is to move into the next two categories. The
third is accuracy, where you can reveal and retrieve facts about each side of the argument and
compare explanations. In this stage, one can start to realize that your side of the argument might
not be right, and the two of you can start to work towards an explanation for each side. The last
category is authenticity. This category is considered to be the gold standard in the conversation
meter. With authenticity, we can clarify the problem that is the source of the argument, and then

Reverse Engineering A Conversation

Western Governors University Reverse Engineering A Conversation Active listening is just as important in a conversation as getting our own point across. Having a discussion with another person is almost like a dance, especially a conversation that turns into an argument. When a conversation turns into an argument, we have a choice to make. We can either overly appease the other person to end the conversation, we can be brutally honest to make sure our point gets across, we can actively listen to the other persons side, or we can clarify the problem and figure out a way to create a common ground between the two sides. These types of conversation strategies can be gauged on a conversation meter. The categories I have described above are pretense, sincerity, accuracy, and authenticity. In pretense, the focus is to avoid difficulties. One may intentionally lie in order to decrease a threat in the conversation. In sincerity, one can tend to be brutally honest and knock heads with the other person to get their opinion across. In this category, the person does not care about hearing the other persons side of the argument and does not tend to care about the other persons feelings. These two categories are the lower side of the conversation scale. Our goal is to move into the next two categories. The third is accuracy, where you can reveal and retrieve facts about each side of the argument and compare explanations. In this stage, one can start to realize that your side of the argument might not be right, and the two of you can start to work towards an explanation for each side. The last category is authenticity. This category is considered to be the gold standard in the conversation meter. With authenticity, we can clarify the problem that is the source of the argument, and then

discover possibilities to reach common ground and solution to the argument. The goal of the conversation meter is to realize what you need to do in the argument to move towards alignment in the conversation. Getting to the goal of authenticity does take practice, because us humans can exhibit bioreactions during an argument that is an automatic response, which can lead us down a path of a conversation of waste. An example of an argument I had recently was with my fiancé about our wedding. Due to the unforeseen circumstances with Covid-19, we unfortunately are being forced to cancel our wedding that was scheduled for September of this year. The wedding is supposed to be in New Jersey; however, New Jersey is one of the states that still has not relaxed on its lockdown regulations and everything is still closed. This is in part to the fact that it is considered to be part of the epicenter of the virus. The rules as of right now are no indoor gatherings of more than 20 people. However, they are allowing outdoor gatherings of up to 100 people. I got an idea from a friend of mine to have the wedding in my parent’s backyard, since we can no longer have it in the yacht club overlooking the water like we had originally planned. When I brought up this idea to my fiancé, his immediate response was no. The immediate no caught me off guard a little, and I think with the stress from the wedding itself caused me to go into a fight bioreaction. This made me get defensive over my idea since he turned it down so fast. The fight bioreaction ultimately lead to us talking to each other in the sincerity category of the conversation meter. I realize now that we both were just trying to get our own opinions across and did not want to hear what the other person had to say. We were trying to talk over each other and did not care about hurting the other persons feelings. I did not want the wedding to get pushed back any longer, while he was acting like he did not care if we ever got married at all. When the sincerity category was clearly not the solution to the argument, I realized that I had to take a set back and figure out

than I do. I have learned that this will take practice to achieve during every disagreement that I have, but with time I will be able to take a step back immediately after I realize that the discussion with another person is turning into an argument. Active listening plays a huge part in good communication as well. These new methods of communication that I have learned will help me move through a disagreement faster to reach the goal of authenticity and develop a common ground between the two sides of the argument.
