CHAPTER I

CAPSTONE PROJECT BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

The internet has provided the means for fast communication and access to information and services. This has become one of the most significant way to deliver learning materials to students in order to contribute and gain information. Todays’ students are digital natives, as they have grown up utilizing advanced technologies like laptops, mobiles, and the internet. Thus, educational institutions are now adapting a blended learning by means of developing various learning management system that has become very beneficial to both teachers and learners. A learning management system is an online system or software allowing synchronous and asynchronous interaction between participants to share educational resources providing an online environment that serve as a virtual classroom.

Technically speaking any system requires a security for its effective management, and one most the most essential component of a learning management system is its ability to control people that can access the system. Developers have always recognized the need for user access management since the initial development of digital networks. As you may imagine, IT admins and developers did not want unauthorized parties to have access to proprietary digital assets. Rather, they wanted to limit access to only those approved for use. Thus, user management was born.

In solution to the problem, the proponents aim to develop a learning management system exclusively for the Quezon City University proving online environment with asynchronous learning to its learners that enables the continuity of serving education despite on participants being in different places. User Management store the details of users who interact with the organizational applications, databases, and other systems, it also involves defining and managing user roles, and their access levels in a system. Administrator is the person with a high-level view of a system's active user sessions, user login status, user privileges and their activity in the system as mentioned early. The administrator also responsible for deleting users, managing user roles and defining authentication policies.

In a Learning Management System, user management mainly provide functionality to manage different users such as student and instructor profile that contains necessary information particularly, profile and student number for student and employee number for the instructors. It contain details specifically name, email, year, course, department and etc.

PROJECT PURPOSE AND DESCRIPTION

General Objective:

The general objective of this study is to develop a Users Management System under Learning Management System in support to security of implementing blended learning environment with the Learning Management System exclusively for Quezon City University.

Specific Objectives:

The following are the specific objectives of the proposed project:

  1. To develop a web based system that will effectively manage the user accounts within the Learning Management.
  2. To develop a system that will manage the security of data allowing access only with the authorize participants.
  3. To develop a system that is well organize to the benefit of university participants providing the user roles defining actions that can only be done by a certain user.
  4. To develop a system supporting secured data management, tracking user activity within the system filtering what a certain users can manipulate within the system.
  5. To develop a system that will allow administrators to effectively manage data stored within the University, enabling file maintenance such as add, edit and delete.
  6. To develop a system that will generate reports providing documents of the necessary data.
  1. The system does not cover any online payments with regards to university’s accounting transaction.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

To deeply understand the terms used in the study, the following are hereby defined.

Administrator

  • The one who is responsible to manage the whole system. System user having the highest user access level that can manipulate data within the system.
  • A person responsible for running a business, organization, etc.

Asynchronous Learning

  • Teachers provide learning materials that can be accessed at any time, and Students given a time frame to comply with learning tasks.
  • Form of education that do not occur in the same place or at the same time.

Audit trail

  • Record that include the activities of every user within the system to monitoring user behavior.
  • Record that provide documentary evidence of the sequence of activities that have affected the system.

Database

  • Collection of the system’s important data that is generally stored and accessed electronically.
  • Collection of data that is stored electronically from a computer system that can be easily access and retrieve.

Software

  • A program that enables the computer to perform a specific task.
  • Collection of instructions and data that tell the computer how to work.

Synchronous Learning

  • Learning event in which a group of students are engaging in learning at the same time.
  • Using of real time interaction such as teleconferencing

Web- based

  • A software use over the internet that is accessible on a web browser.
  • Program that is accessed over a network connection using HTTP, rather than existing within a device’s memory.
