Answer any THREE questions. All questions carry equal marks.
(a) A DDBMS requires functional characteristics that can be grouped and described as transparency features. With regards to transaction transparency , distinguish between remote request, remote transaction, distributed transaction, and distributed request. Use diagrams and examples to support your answer. (25 Marks)
(b) A two-phase commit (2PC) protocol is used for implementing distributed transactions. Explain the need for the 2PC protocol and describe the two phases. (8 Marks)
Q2. World Wide Web provides a global market for products and services. From a technological perspective, this requires a superb database connectivity facilitated by proper Web interface.
Briefly outline current approaches to integrate Web and databases.

Q3. A data warehouse (DW) is a copy of transaction data specifically structured for querying and reporting.
(a) Identify and briefly outline major components of a DW environment. (18 Marks)
(b) According to Bill Inmon, “A data warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant and non-volatile collection of data in support of management's decision making process.” Outline the major characteristics of a DW and compare them to those of the operational databases. (15 Marks)
