FOCUS ON WRITING AN ARTICLE FOR FIRST
Hints
Add ashort titleto catch the reader's attention. Make sure it is relevant. You can use the
one in the question or invent one of your own.
Introduce the topic. Although you don't know the readers personally, you can address them
directly and ask them a rhetorical question. It helps to involve them.
Divide your article intosections according to the input. One or two paragraphs will do.
Develop the ideasin the task input. Remember .
Use apersonal or more neutral style, butnot formal
Show a range of structures.
Giveexamples where appropriateto bring your article to life
Usehumour where appropriate.

POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN WRITING AN ARTICLE
Your article should be written to give information or express an opinion. Make sure you identify the
target audience before you start writing.
Each of your paragraphs should deal with one issue or aspect.
Make sure that the vocabulary you use is sophisticated. For instance, instead of using “good”, you
could use “superb”. Instead of using “bad”, you could use “awful”. Just make sure that you use your
vocabulary correctly.
FCE WRITING: POINTS TO CONSIDER WHEN WRITING AN ARTICLE HEADLINE
A headline should be short and give a clear summary of the information presented in the article.
Here are some rules for writing headlines that you may find useful:
oUse the present tense to describe events which have occurred very recently:Storm hits
England
oOmit using the verb “be” when using the passive voice to describe a past event:Lost cat
found
oUse “to be + past participle” when using the passive voice to describe a future
event:Community centre to be opened by Lord Mayor
oOmit articles:Cat trapped in tree
oPut several nouns after each other:Birmingham train crash injures 12 people
It has to get attention
It has to be interesting
It has to be easy to read
Write a good ending
In an essay you sum up the points that have gone before and draw a conclusion from that. But in an
