For this task, you will write a story together with your group which you will then revise and rewrite incorporating feedback from your groupmates. In order to function well, group work needs all members to keep in touch with their group and contribute regularly. The timing of the following steps is recommended and you can negotiate this with your group if needed.
Start by doing the exercises in Storytelling Part 1 in Materials & Information Sources. We recommend you go back to them periodically over the course of this CA.
Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder in the Forum.
When the first draft of the story is finished, inform your teacher who will then provide the group with feedback focusing on vocabulary.
At the same time, in your Group Wiki , read all the sections of the story again and add comments and feedback for the other group members. For help with the kind of feedback you can give, go to the Text cohesion and Checking your writing sections in the materials: Storytelling Part 1 Communication strategies.
IMPORTANT: Your comments and feedback should focus on the VOCABULARY used by your groupmates in their writing. Consider these questions when you read your groupmates' sections:
Has the group used all the keywords from the CA4 Story Prompts document? Are all the sentences clear enough to be understood without a second reading? Are appropriate synonyms used to avoid repetition? Is the vocabulary typical of the type of story you’re writing? Does any ‘Spanglish’ need to be replaced with appropriate idiomatic English expressions?
You do not need to comment on grammar or structure for this CA activity but if you see errors of this kind , you can point them out to the writer. DO NOT make changes to other students’ work.
Some useful phrases for giving constructive peer feedback :
I liked the way you… (positive) Why don't you… (suggestion) I suggest writing/changing/explaining… (suggestion) Have you thought about including… (suggestion) It's not clear to me what you mean… (request for explanation)
Leave your feedback before the next step (6) to help your groupmates revise and rewrite their parts. Click on ‘Edit’ in your groupmate’s wiki page > highlight the text you want to comment on > click on the ‘Comment’ button and write your feedback. Alternatively, leave your comments below your groupmate’s review in a different colour. Remember to click SAVE when you have finished.
With the feedback and comments you receive from your groupmates and your teacher, edit your part to improve it. Again, check that the Group Story includes all the keywords highlighted in the CA Story prompts document.
Make sure your story makes a coherent whole text and is not just a collection of individual parts.
To help you edit, here is some advice:
Use appropriate time connectors so that the reader can follow the sequence of events in your story (e.g., at first, then, beforehand, afterwards, as soon as, while, eventually, etc.) Beware of false friends, such as actual (Catalan/Spanish) ≠ actual (English) Check your pronouns are correct and correspond to your nouns Make sure that verb tenses are consistent throughout the story Check and correct spelling mistakes and use the same font colour and size
When you are all happy with your Group Story, post it underneath your original one in your Group Wiki page so that your teacher can see the changes you have introduced. Then, one member of the group will submit your Story to the folder in the Forum > CA4 Storytelling.
Read at least two other group stories in the Forum and reply to them. Do so generously , by commenting on what you liked about the stories and asking about anything you might not have understood.
This is the second of three Reading Comprehension exercises you will do this semester. Use this exercise to practise your comprehension skills as the mark will not count. However, the third reading will count towards your CA6 mark. To do this comprehension exercise, click on the link Reading 2 in your classroom. Your results will be available after the deadline.
The listening and speaking activities are about telling stories and correspond to materials: Storytelling Part 2 , which you will find under Materials & Information Sources in the classroom. We recommend that you start by doing these exercises so that you can learn the vocabulary needed, revise grammar and listen to ideas about the topic.
Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder in the Forum.
