CA4.1 Essay
How have the rights of women changed in your country over the last fifty years?
Since the inception of democracy, women’s rights historically used to stand as one of
the cornerstone policies in the pursuit of equality. At the beginning of democracy,
women were relegated to second-class citizenship, and they were not usually used to
having the rights that we currently enjoy.
In the early years, society was commonly accustomed to a reality in which, for
example, women could not open a bank account without supervision either from the
husband or legal guardian. Little by little, social change came about due to the fight for
women’s rights, and that was reflected. One of the decisive factors for this real change
was Spain’s entry into the European Union. As a result, it was from that moment on
that equality became a demand at the international level, so it was through these legal
impositions that society gradually got used to normalizing equality.
On the other hand, the struggle of various political parties was decisive in the progress,
as legislative reforms were progressively taking place. Thus, women who used to
require legal assistance for certain legal acts now enjoy the same rights as men.
However, there are still aspects such as salary or corporate leadership where we find
the largest gap through which one must continue to pursue to achieve full equality.
To conclude, women’s rights remain critically necessary; despite equal rights,
effectiveness is key. Achieving true gender equality requires legislative progress,
effective implementation, and a societal change. (240 words)
