Statistics Estimation: Understanding Estimators and Estimates - Prof. Martínez-Giralt, Apuntes de Economía

An introduction to estimation in statistics, explaining what an estimator is, how it uses sample data to produce an approximation of a population parameter, and the concept of an estimate. The document also covers the sample mean as an example of an estimator.

ESTIMATION
Estimator: is a formula that uses the values in the sample at hand
(observations) in order to produce an approximation to the true value of an
unknown population parameter. An estimate or estimation is the particular
value of an estimator that is obtained from a particular sample.
An estimator is a random variable (its value is subject to variations due to
chance).
